Day 1 of Terceira Island itinerary: Visit Angra do Heroismo
Dedicate the first day of your Terceira island itinerary to visiting the island’s capital, Angra do Heroismo, and explore all its secrets. The city’s historical and architectural heritage was classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
When visiting Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira island, don’t miss:
Praça Velha
Praça Velha (Old Square) is (as its name suggests!) one of the oldest in Portugal, with the building of the Town Hall standing prominently.
Cais de Alfândega
Cais de Alfândega (Customs Pier) was the first pier of Angra do Heroismo and is now dominated by the beautiful Misericórdia (Mercy) Church, painted in blue and white and dating from 1746.
Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Our Lady of Mount Carmel), also know as Church of the College or the Jesuits, was consecrated in 1651, abandoned after the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from Portugal, at the time of the Marquis of Pombal, and currently under restoration.
Fortress of São João Baptista on Mount Brasil
The Fortress of São João Baptista (Saint John the Baptist) is the largest in the Azores and one of the most important Atlantic fortresses built by the Spanish, to protect the fleets sailing the American silver routes.
